The distinguished Shapira family press in Slavita, founded by Rebbi Moshe Shapira (son of Rebbi Pinchas of Koretz), was regarded as one of the most prestigious and elevated Hebrew printing houses. This was due both to the exceptional quality of its typeface, paper, and craftsmanship, and—above all—to the sanctity and purity of its owners. Great Chassidic masters were particular to use books printed in Slavita, saying that works printed in Slavita and Zhitomir possess a “special holiness.” It is even related that the printing tools and typefaces were immersed in a mikveh before the work began! It is famously said that owning seforim printed in Slavita and Zhitomir is a segulah for protection of the home and for success.
