State medal After King David established his capital in Jerusalem, David and the Israelites brought in the Ark of the Covenant. Out of great joy they accompanied the Ark of the Covenant with harps and drums. During the long years of exile, this procession became a symbol of the intense yearning of the Jewish people to return to the built Jerusalem. In Chagall’s work ”The Entrance to Jerusalem” which he created especially for a tapestry to adorn the House of the Knesset, King David dances and plays his harp in front of the Ark of the Covenant. In a wonderful natural harmony, Chagall merges King David and the procession of followers and pioneers in their common dance in the Land of Israel. The past, present and future of the people of Israel merge and joy bursts from the picture. A section of Chagall’s wonderful work is presented in color lithography in a state medal in 22 carat gold and 18 carat gold. On the back of the medal is the menorah: a section of a mosaic that Chagall created for the Knesset. Interior: colored lithograph of King David playing the harp and dancing, a fragment of Chagall’s painting ”The Entrance to Jerusalem” from the tapestry that graces the ”Chagall Lounge” in the Knesset in Jerusalem.
