Pair of Antique French Brass Candlesticks in the Charles X Style, Early 19th Century - Height: 28 cm Base diameter: 12 cm The candlesticks date from the French Restoration period and are in the Charles X style (Charles X Period). Approximate date: circa 1820–1830. With a rich, naturally dark patina. The candlesticks display the principal characteristics of French decorative art during the Charles X period and the transition from the austere Empire style toward a more refined, bourgeois and intimate design. The stems are richly hand-engraved using the Guilloch? (engine-turned) technique, with geometric patterns of curving diagonal lines. This technique is the style's most distinctive hallmark, favoring complex abstract geometric ornament over figurative or mythological subjects. The rounded, stepped bases incorporate a circumferential band of tiny flowers/chrysanthemums alongside a dense lattice pattern. This motif reflects the Restoration period's interpretation of Neoclassicism—the refinement of classical elements into delicate, repeating patterns proportioned for domestic interiors. The combination of pronounced knops along the stems and the broad, removable drip pans (original to the period) creates the silhouette characteristic of Parisian boutique candlesticks of the 1820s. The interiors reveal the traditional manufacturing methods of the period: hand-lathe marks inside the bases and original internal fittings comprising a threaded rod and hand-cut square nut, clear evidence of the item's authenticity in the first half of the 19th century. Minor distortions to the bases.
