Antique Oval Bronze Relief Plaque – Portrait of a Scholar, Signed - Medium: Cast bronze with a rich, natural dark brown patina. Estimated Period: Late 19th century or first half of the 20th century Total height: 42 cm Width: 30 cm Weight: Heavy (solid casting) Condition: Very good antique condition, showing authentic age-appropriate patina and wear that enhances the sculptural depth. Includes an integrated suspension loop at the top for wall mounting. The oval plaque features a frontal (three-quarter) portrait of an elderly man with a distinguished intellectual appearance. The figure is characterized by highly detailed, sharp facial features, including deep expression lines around the eyes and forehead, a prominent long nose, and firmly set lips that convey a serious, contemplative expression. The hair is partially long and swept back, and the figure wears a coat with a stiff, high collar—attire typical of European intellectuals, clergy, philosophers, or scientists of the 18th-century Enlightenment era. The facial composition shares a strong resemblance to historical portraits of the French philosopher Voltaire or contemporary scholars of his time. The piece is distinguished by a masterful sculptural finish and a striking sense of realism, lending a deep psychological presence to the subject's gaze.
