Bidspirit auction | Italian Master (17th Century) –
Italian Master (17th Century) – Mountainous Landscape, oil on canvas - Dimensions: 68 x 101 cm (Unframed) Condition Report: Old color retouches, a tear in the canvas in the upper left corner, and paint flaking. Artwork Description & Artistic Evaluation: This large-scale oil on canvas painting is attributed to an Italian master working during the Baroque period (17th century). The artwork features a classical composition of a southern European mountainous landscape, centered around a flowing river flanked by lush vegetation and expressive, twisting trees. In the right background, ancient structures and classical ruins blend seamlessly into the towering landscape. In the right foreground, two figures of travelers appear, providing a human scale to the composition (staffage). Stylistically, the painting is characterized by dramatic chiaroscuro (light and shadow play) and a golden light, highly typical of the Italianate and Arcadian landscape schools of the era. Authentication & Dating (17th Century): The attribution of the artwork to the 17th century is based on a distinct combination of historical catalog documentation and physical characteristics inherent to the painting. The surface exhibits a dense, fine network of natural cracking (craquelure) that has developed over centuries. The reverse of the painting provides supporting physical evidence: the canvas consists of coarse, hand-woven linen that has darkened naturally over time, stretched over an original wooden strainer showing hand-carved joints and deep woodworm wear typical of centuries-old materials. This corroborates the conclusions of the art historians from the German auction house, who officially cataloged the artwork as an authentic piece by a 17th-century Italian master. Provenance: The artwork benefits from established historical catalog documentation. It was included and sold in Auction 71 of the renowned auction house ”Kunsthaus am Museum” (managed by Carola van Ham) in Cologne, Germany, in 1977. In the original catalog, it is registered under lot number 1336 and accompanied by an archival photograph in the plates appendix. Conservation & Restoration Potential: The surface of the painting retains its original paint layers beneath an old layer of varnish that has naturally darkened over the years. A controlled, professional cleaning and removal of the old varnish by an expert restorer could dramatically revitalize the artwork, uncovering the original richness of the sky and landscape tones, and highlighting hidden architectural and atmospheric details in the composition.
