Valentinian I 364-375 AD. Bronze (AE) coin with CHI-RHO monogram. Weight about 2.70 gram, Size about 17mm.
Valentinian bust to right. / Valentinian holding labarum with CHI RHO monogram and dragging bound captive.
The Chi Rho is one of the earliest forms of christogram, formed by superimposing the first two (capital) letters—chi and rho (ΧΡ)—of the Greek word ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ (Christos).
Constantine I had dreamt of being ordered to put a "heavenly divine symbol" on the shields of his soldiers. The next morning, as reported by Lactantius Constantine I made the marks and won the Battle of the Milvian Bridge with Maxentius.
