In 1910-1917 he studied at the Penza Art College (under Pyotr Korovin, Nikolai Petrov, Ivan Goryushkin-Sorokopudov). In 1920 he graduated from the Higher Art Studios. From his student years he participated in the exhibitions of the ”White Bear” and ”Volzhsky Soyuz” factions of progressive Russian artists. In 1922 he moved to Yerevan, where he carried out active creative, pedagogical, scientific and public activities. For about 35 years he taught in newly opened professional educational institutions. In 1923-1927, at the Yerevan State Art and Theatre Institute, in 1930-1935, at the Yerevan Polytechnic Institute, in 1945-1958, at the State Institute of Fine Arts and Theatre (professor since 1947). In 1939, on the initiative of Gyurjyan, the ”Artists' Traveling Studio” was created. In 1951-1959 and 1968-1969, he was the president of the Union of Artists of Armenia.
