Luo Gongliu (Chinese, 1916 - 2004) - Luo Gongliu (Chinese, 1916 - 2004), ”Two Sisters”, 1950's, oil on canvas, 100,5 x 97,5 cm Notes Luo Gongliu was a Chinese painter and printmaker, a key figure in 20th-century Chinese art known for his depictions of the Communist Revolution. Born in Kaiping, Guangdong, he studied at the Hangzhou Art Academy (1936) before relocating to Yan'an in 1938 to enroll at the Lu Xun Art Academy. He later worked in the Taihang Liberated Area and various North China art institutions, joining the Central Art Academy faculty in 1950. From 1955 to 1958, he studied oil painting in the Soviet Union, after which he returned to the Academy, heading its Studio 2 for realist oil painting. He served as vice president from 1979. Beginning his career as a woodcut artist, he later focused on oil painting, with his work chronicling the Chinese Communist Revolution. His paintings are held in prominent collections including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the CAFA Art Museum. A painting with the same plot, but from little bit other angle, is in the collection of Huamao Art Museum.
