Henry Elibekian (Armenian, 1936 - 2019) - Henry Elibekian (Armenian, 1936 - 2019), ”Still life on an oval table”, tempera on cardboard, signed and dated 1972 l. r. and on reverse, 80,5 x 58 cm. Notes Henry Elibekyan was born in Tbilisi. He began his education at the Yerevan Institute of Fine Arts and Theatre, studying acting, and continued at the Tbilisi Theatre Institute. Later, he turned to painting and graphic arts, studying in Yerevan and Lviv; in 1967, he graduated from the painting department in Yerevan. From 1967 to 1971, Elibekyan worked as a designer in Moscow before settling permanently in Yerevan. Starting in 1965, he regularly participated in republican, all-Union, and international exhibitions, presenting his works in Germany, France, the United States, the Netherlands, and other countries. In his early period, he created compositions and assemblages. Beginning in the 1990s, he increasingly turned to vivid abstract painting. In addition to painting, he worked in sculpture, creating expressive, contrasting forms, and also carried out artistic actions and performances. As a theatre artist, he designed productions based on works by Dürrenmatt, Charents, and Sundukyan. Elibekyan’s works are held in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Museum of the Peoples of the East, the Bakhrushin Theatre Museum, the National Gallery of Armenia, the Museum of Modern Art of Yerevan, and in private collections worldwide. In 1990, he was awarded the title of Honored Art Worker of Armenia.
