Figura androgina
Statue in “pietra serena” (blue-gray sandstone) dating back to the 19th century and of central Italian origin.
It depicts a character with androgynous and asexual features, bearing some attributes that would lead him back to Greek mythology: we see bunches of grapes hanging from his left hand, while with his right he holds a water bottle made from a sheep's bladder, a widely used container in Ancient Greece.
The shoes, however, are a typical element of Renaissance but also neoclassical sculptural art, of which the aforementioned work is the result.
In our opinion, the author's work presents a strong inspiration to some Renaissance sculptures by the Florentine author Desiderio di Bartolomeo di Francesco, known as Desiderio da Settignano (Settignano, circa 1430 - Florence, 16 January 1464), a skilled sculptor with Donatello training.
The iconographic choices, the execution technique of the physical shapes and hair, as well as the sweetness of the boyish face are quite similar.
