Mosaico cosmatesco
Fragment of a floor in marble, colored glass, serpentine and red porphyry, dating back to the 15th century and of Roman origin.
It is part of the artistic production of the Cosmatesque style.
It is a type of ornamentation characteristic of Roman marble workers that flourished in the 12th and 13th centuries, but of Byzantine origin (opus alexandrinum).
These artists carried out decorations on floors, tabernacles and cloisters using polychrome marble inlays of various and imaginative shapes.
In the last century this decoration was called "cosmatesque", as it was used by the Cosmati family, who owe their name to one of the most important exponents, Cosma, son of Jacopo di Lorenzo.
