The French abstract painter Jean-Michel Atlan was a potent force in the post-war art scene in Europe. Born in 1913 in Constantine, Algeria, Atlan relocated to Paris to pursue philosophy but soon found his calling as an artist. Self-taught, he experimented with dense black lines lines and organic shapes to create complex, rhythmic compositions. Rich with raw, kinetic energy, his work echoes the tumultuous societal shifts of his era. As a Jewish artist during the Nazi occupation, Atlan faced persecution, but his relentless spirit drove him to join the French Resistance. After the end of World War II, he became involved in the avant-garde group CoBrA, a collective that cherished spontaneous and instinctive artistry and shunned the rigidity of other post-war movements. Throughout his career, he exhibited extensively across Europe, and his work is now held in prestigious collections worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
