The Karaganda Metallurgical Plant (Kazakhstan's Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works) in Temirtau was founded in 1944 and was one of the largest metallurgical enterprises in the USSR. The plant gained notoriety in connection with the events of 1959, dubbed the ”Temirtau Uprising” The active phase of the plant's construction occurred at the end of the 1950s - hundreds of people were invited to the construction of new workshops, announced by the All-Union Youth Construction, on Komsomol vouchers, and former Karlag prisoners and Bulgarian youth also participated in the construction. In total, more than 25,000 people were involved in the construction, most of whom were settled in a tent city (only the living conditions of Bulgarians, as foreign guests, were more comfortable). In 1959, riots broke out due to constant interruptions in the supply of drinking water and food, lack of adequate housing, and poor working conditions. The construction participants were unhappy that the party leadership ignored their requests for solutions to problems with drinking water and food, as well as the fact that the working and living conditions of foreigners were noticeably different from their own.
