Portmeirion pottery began in 1960 when Susan Williams-Ellis, daughter of the architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, and her husband Euan Cooper-Willis acquired a small pottery-decorating company called A. E. Gray Ltd. in Stoke-on-Trent. This acquisition was followed by the purchase of Kirkhams Ltd. in 1961, which allowed them to manufacture pottery as well as decorate it.
