Cast Iron Garden Bench- Berlin, Rustic Pattern - A fine cast-iron seat in the Berlin, or Rustic pattern, with vines and leafy foliate motifs, American, ca. 1880. A relatively rare form produced by American and British manufacturers, this seat is termed the“Berlin” seat in J. W. Fiske Iron Works’ catalogues, but is also called the “Rustic” seat in the catalogues of the Coalbrookdale Company. Coalbrookdale registered the design with the London Public Records Office on April 17, 1851.While Coalbrookdale’s example has an iron slatted seat, J. W. Fiske’s version has a seat made of wooden slats. The particular bench shown here is unmarked, and could have been made by a number of American makers. Provenance: Hudson River Valleyestate.
