Gold and pearl nose ring - Gold and pearl nose ring India, 19th century Gold setting with diamond bezel in the form of a drop or small mango (auspicious symbol) surmounted by clusters of micro pearls, emeralds and rubies. Generally worn by married women as a symbol of their marital status, the nose ornament was also considered an element of beauty in South India and one of the indicators used by future mothers-in-law to choose their future daughter-in-law. Typically used by Hindi women, however, it could also be worn by Muslim women and children who were given a small nose ring (nathni) in the name of some important saint.
