Tantric carved wooden seal - Tantric carved wooden seal Northern India or Nepal, 18th-19th century Inscribed with Rañjana script within a grid of 36 squares (6X6), each engraved with a syllable probably related to the bija mantra (yantra) used in Tantric devotional practices. The Rañjana script is a writing system of Nepalese origin, developed from ancient Indian scripts, and is widely used in the Vajrayana Tantric Buddhist context, particularly for transcribing Sanskrit and Tibetan texts. The syllables are arranged in a grid according to the yantra tradition, or mystical diagrams employed during meditation. On the back is a handle that suggests it was used as a stamp.
