Bronze Nandi bull on stepped base - Bronze Nandi bull on stepped base Central or South India, 18th century Devotional sculpture depicting the sacred bull and vahana (vehicle) of the god Shiva, among the most revered figures in the Hindu pantheon. The animal is typically depicted in a crouched position with its body adorned with ritual necklaces. Next to its right forepaw is a small lingam that links it to the Shivaite cult. The bronze shows an irregular dark patina and traces of red pigmentation, remnants of cultic use. Provenance: Central Italy collection. H. 12 X 12.5 X p. 8.5 cm
