A large Krishna Venugopala - A large Krishna Venugopala India, possibly Orissa, 18th century Depicting Krishna in his version of a 'flute-playing shepherd', in a graceful and sinuous pose, in tribhanga posture with his legs crossed and body slightly inclined according to the canons of sacred dance while his hands raised to his mouth suggest the act of playing the flute. The face is gently modelled with elongated eyes and a smiling expression reflecting the joyful and affectionate nature of the deity. The hairstyle is made in a spiral culminating in a pointed lock while the earrings and minimal decorative elements maintain the classical iconographic pattern of the late Nayaka period. Traces of red pigment visible on the face, hands and feet indicate devotional use. Provenance: Central Italy collection. H. 21.8 X 7 cm
