Bronze devotional depicting standing Devi with lotus flower (padma) - Bronze devotional depicting standing Devi with lotus flower (padma) South India, 19th century The deity, depicted in a standing position on a lotus-flower shaped base, is characterized by the presence of a padma (lotus flower) in her left hand. This attribute symbolizes purity, fertility and beauty and allows her to be identified as Lakshmi, although the absence of other distinctive attributes leaves the interpretation open to a generic devi or auxiliary personification. The bust is adorned with a moulded necklace in relief while the drapery of the dhoti bears dotted engravings. Traces of red ritual pigmentation. Provenance: Central Italy collection. H. 8.5 X 4 cm
