Pair of bronze pichkaris (syringes for colored water) - Pair of bronze pichkaris (syringes for colored water) Northern India, 19th-20th century Pair of ritual instruments used during the Hindu festival of Holi, the renowned festival of colors. Cylindrical bodies feature parallel ring decorations and rosettes or floral geometric patterns. The finials taper into conical nozzles through which the pigmented water was sprayed. During the festival, these syringes were filled with water colored by natural powders (gulal) and used in communal play that celebrates the arrival of spring, joy, and spiritual renewal.
