Bronze devotional depicting Vishnu - Bronze devotional depicting Vishnu India, 19th century Depicting the deity standing on a circular base in the form of a stylised lotus flower resting on a quadrangular platform. Vishnu is portrayed in his four-armed iconography, whose hands hold the classical attributes prescribed by tradition: the upper right hand holds a chakra, the cosmic wheel symbolizing destructive and regulating power; the upper left hand holds the shankha, the shell symbolizing primordial sound and purity. The lower left hand is empty but gesturally active, while the lower right hand holds a padma (lotus flower), an attribute associated with purity, divine manifestation and the cosmic cycle. The face is rendered with elongated eyes closed in contemplation, a prominent nose and sober mouth, framed by a conical headdress with several horizontal bands. Earrings, necklace and bracelets enrich the figure. The nude torso contrasts with the draped dotted dhoti clinging to the legs. Remnants of red pigment are traces of votive use.
