Devotional Jain Bronze figure of Parshvanatha - Devotional Jain Bronze figure of Parshvanatha Western India, probably Gujarat, early 19th century or earlier Jain sculpture depicting the twenty-third Tirthankara, recognizable by the presence of his attribute, or a multi-headed serpent (naga) canopy, which fans out above his head and whose coils cover the entire back of the figure, merging with the base. The figure is portrayed in perfect ascetic stillness, standing in the kayotsarga posture, with rigid arms and hands extended down along the sides, signifying complete detachment from the physical world. The nude, slender, and symmetrical body reflects the canons of Digambara iconography, which exalts material renunciation as a means of spiritual liberation (moksa).
