Bidspirit auction | A sketch with two elephants
A sketch with two elephants in battle - A sketch with two elephants in battle Northern India, Rajasthan, 19th century Pencil drawing on paper depicting three elephant drivers (mahout) in the lower register and two elephants in battle in the upper area. Animals and characters seem to have been drawn by different hands: experienced and detail-oriented those who drew the characters; more naïve those of the elephant drawer. Depictions of elephants are common both in Rajput and Mughal paintings as they were considered a symbol of royalty, a remarkable asset in battle and were used during official parades and tiger hunts. h. 44 X l. 64 cm (50 X 70 cm con cornice)
