Collection of portraits of Indian notables - Collection of portraits of Indian notables India, second half of the 19th century Gallery of 13 portraits of notables and sovereigns of 19th century India made according to a Indo-Persian figurative tradition that combined lithographic techniques and hand-painted interventions. The figures, recognizable by their ceremonial clothing, jewellery and weapons, are depicted frontally or in profile, seated on thrones, flanked by curtains and architectural backdrops that emphasize their institutional role and prestige. Although the exact identities of the subjects have not all been confirmed, they are most probably local rulers, dignitaries and members of the political elite of the Indian subcontinent portrayed in official poses according to a visual convention influenced by Mughal court painting and Anglo-Indian portraiture. These works, probably taken from a now unidentified publishing corpus, testify to a transitional phase between the traditional miniature and the illustrated print of colonial India.
