Miniature painting depicting a Sadhu - Miniature painting depicting a Sadhu Northern India, 19th century Tempera and natural pigment on paper, depicting a sadhu seated in a meditation or teaching posture. The figure is portrayed frontally with an austere and hieratic expression, the forehead is marked with the tilaka sign and the body wrapped in an ochre robe, a colour traditionally associated with renunciation and asceticism. It is likely that the figure represents an itinerant ascetic belonging to one of India's many ascetic traditions (such as natha, dasa, or sant), or a guru worshipped within a specific lineage (sampradaya).
