Mughal painting of a dignitary - Mughal painting of a dignitary India, 18th - early 19th century Miniature painted on thick cardboard and bordered by a polychrome marbled frame with gilded friezes with floral motifs. Probably originally part of an album (muraqqa'), the painting depicts a notable in an upright position, in profile towards the left, wearing a long light green finely hatched robe, an ornate narrow sash at the waist and a headdress decorated with gold motifs. In his hand he holds a sword with a gilded hilt attesting to his high rank. On the front is a label inscribed: S. Khalil Ahmad, Maps Contractor, 18-Gulzare Khalil, Shahjahanpur, possibly indicating the name of a collector or previous owner. On the left edge, beside the decorated frame, are some hand-written inscriptions in Arabic or Urdu characters. The back of the card shows circular stamps in black ink, presumably seals of old collections. Provenance: Central Italy collection. Cm 24.5x15
