Painting depicting the family of Krishna - Painting depicting the family of Krishna Northern India, Rajasthan, late 19th century Gouache and gold on paper, the painting depicts Vasudeva and Devaki, Krishna's biological parents, with their children on their laps. Vasudeva, on the left of the painting, holds Balarama, while Devaki plays with baby Krishna. Vasudeva and Devaki are examples of righteousness and protagonists of a prophecy that saves Krishna from certain death. The two were in fact imprisoned by King Kamsa because of a prophecy announcing the tyrant's death at the hands of their eighth son. To save him, Vasudeva exchanged him for a baby girl and entrusted him to Yashoda and Nanda to Gokula. Krishna thus grew up in secret, safe, until the fulfilment of his divine destiny.
