Painting depicting Maharana - Painting depicting Maharana Northern India, Rajasthan, Mewar, 19th - early 20th century Gouache and gold on paper, depicting a ruler, probably a posthumous portrait of Sangram Singh II (r. 1710 - 1734) in his left profile caught in the act of offering pan to the heir to the throne. The high lineage of the personage is emphasized by the flaming golden halo around his head. The tradition of offering bread to the heir to the throne publicly sanctioned the recognition of the heir by the sovereign and was a symbol of good omen, loyalty and peace.
