Illuminated folio from a dispersed manuscript - Illuminated folio from a dispersed manuscript Northern India, 18th century Twelve lines of Persian text on paper, arranged on a single column and penned in nasta'liq calligraphy in black ink. The script is bordered by gilt fillet, the margin finely illuminated with arabesques, floral elements and cloud ribbons within interlaced poly-lobed cartouches on a gilt and cobalt blue background. The text describes, in a celebratory tone, historical or mythical episodes related to the life of an idealized ruler. The verse continues the narration with the same calligraphic register, but without illumination. It is therefore probable that this is a folio from a lost copy of the Tarikh-i Jahangushay (History of the Conqueror of the World) or another Persian historical chronicle, intended to glorify the figure of a ruler or dynasty through an elaborate and cultured narrative.
