Pair of Candoglia marble columns Italy, 20th century 285x42x42 cm. - with turned shafts and square bases and capitals.Candoglia marble is a symbol of Milan: used since Roman times, it became famous for its most important application in the fourteenth century—the construction of the Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano).In 1387 Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Lord of Milan, granted the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo the right to use Candoglia marble for the cathedral’s construction.Even today, under a 1927 law later confirmed by regional legislation in Piedmont, the cathedral works authority retains the exclusive right to use Candoglia marble. For this reason its primary use remains the restoration and maintenance of the Milan Cathedral.
