Printed by Rabbi Chaim Mordechai Margaliot, Dubno, 1820–1825. Incomplete copy, with many scholarly handwritten glosses. Rare. 158–325, [1] leaves. On the final leaf are calendar tables for the coming years beginning from 1826, indicating that the printing concluded in 1825. This is the first edition of Sha’arei Teshuvah. In the introduction to the Sefer [lacking in this copy], the Gaon Rabbi Ephraim Zalman Margaliot writes about “the troubles that befell during the printing of this Sefer… and more than half burned in a fire. And heavy mourning for my brother… Rabbi Chaim Mordechai, of blessed memory, Av Beit Din of great Dubno… who began the work, but the time did not favor him… and he passed to the World of Truth… and afterwards… I took hold of everything… to arrange the Sha’arei Teshuvah and Yad Ephraim.” The commentary Sha’arei Teshuvah is among the important and foundational commentaries on Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim, concisely collecting sources from the vast responsa literature, and was later included in many printed editions of the Shulchan Aruch, including those of the Mishnah Berurah. With more than twenty antique scholarly handwritten glosses. With an additional leaf containing a note and a copied passage from Tosafot in Arakhin.
