Manuscript writings of the Sabba of Kelm — [37] essays and letters copied by a student in manuscript, with slight additions and variations from the printed versions. 127 pp., including a table of contents, and [2] numbered blank pages. Included with the item is a leaf detailing where each essay and letter appearing in the manuscript was later printed. The Gaon Rabbi Simcha Zissel Ziv (1824–1898), one of the foremost disciples of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter (together with Rabbi Itzele Peterburger, Rabbi Yosef Yozel Horowitz, and others), and the founder of the Kelm school of Mussar — known for its uncompromising demand for truth, inner moral integrity, and precise character refinement. Born into a distinguished Lithuanian family, he was known from youth for his depth in Torah and profound thought. In the early years of Rabbi Yisrael Salanter’s movement, Rabbi Simcha Zissel initially opposed the approach (along with other great scholars such as Rabbi Moshe Danishevsky of Slabodka and many more). R. Simcha Zissel even traveled expressly to confront Rabbi Yisrael Salanter about his method — yet, hearing one Mussar discourse from him, he reversed his position and cleaved to Rabbi Yisrael Salanter for the rest of his life. He later developed his own path in interpreting his teacher’s Torah and founded the famed Talmud Torah of Kelm, where many of the great giants of the next generation studied.
