Siddur with Revid HaZahav, intended for Torah and Tefillah, by R. Yosef Shapatchnik of London, published by the author. London, 1929. 112 pp. Siddur edited by R. Yosef Shapatchnik of London, with his commentary. On the title page the author appears with the title: Chief Rabbi of The Rabbinical Association [Chief Rabbi of the Rabbinical Association (in London)]. R. Yosef ben R. Yehuda Aryeh Shapotchnik (1882–1937) — emigrated from Kishinev to Odessa in 1896, and studied Torah and science. In 1902 he published his Sefer Birchas Yosef. In 1904 he received Semichah from Rabbanim in Galicia. In 1909 he emigrated to Central Europe and authored Sefarim on matters of education. In 1913 he emigrated to England, where he also engaged in matters of Kashrus and Gemilus Chesed for those in need. After World War I he sought to print an advanced edition of Shas with more than one thousand commentaries, and sought to establish a worldwide association for the dissemination of Torah. From the mid-1920s he sought to assist the many Agunos, and began corresponding with numerous Rabbanim regarding various avenues of Halachic permission for women in need of Chalitzah who were unable to carry it out. His attempt to implement his ideas in practice in this area led to the publication of the booklets Likro LaAsurim Dror and Cheirus Olam (London, 1928), which aroused a sharp controversy and harsh condemnations by hundreds of the Rabbanim of Poland.
