Power of attorney document from Rabbi Meir Adrei in honor of Rabbi Bechor Yehuda Waknin. Tiberias, 5683 [1922]. ”I have placed the hand of the above-mentioned representative as my own hand and his power as my own power” — a power of attorney in favor of Rabbi Yehuda Waknin. Tiberias, 5683 [1922]. [1] leaf, written in semi-cursive script, signed by Rabbi Pinchas Rafael Toledano and Rabbi David Chai Abuhab. Rabbi Bechor Yehuda ben Rabbi Yaakov Waknin (d. 1866) – a sharp Torah scholar who served as secretary of the Beit Din in Tiberias. In 1925 he was invited to England to serve as a private teacher for the Sassoon family’s children, in subjects of Torah, Talmud, Halacha, and Hebrew. He later returned to Tiberias and Jerusalem. His mother, Mrs. Leah of the Birdugo family, was a descendant on her father’s side of the Gaon author of ”Mayim Amukim, ” and on her mother’s side of the Gaon Raphael Birdugo. Rabbi Pinchas Rafael Toledano (d. 1947) – brother of Rabbi Meir Toledano, chief rabbi of Bastia (Corsica). Their father, Rabbi Baruch Toledano, immigrated to Tiberias from Meknes in his youth and served as a Shadar (rabbinic emissary) to Turkish cities, as a dayan and secretary of the Talmud Torah. Rabbi David Chai Abuhab (d. 1965) – the official in charge of the Rambam’s tomb. His father was the Gaon Rabbi Bechor Massoud Abuhab, a communal leader in Tiberias, shadar to Turkey and North Africa, and later acting French consul in Tiberias. Folding marks, filing holes.
