“His soul’s wish to assist as appropriate for a Talmid Chacham” – letter of Maran the immense Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Halevi Wosner, author of “Shevet Halevi”, calling for support of one of the excelling Torah scholars of Yerushalayim. 1954. The letter was sent to the mayor of Bnei Brak, Rabbi Yitzchak Gerstencorn, the founder of the city, and in which he asks him to assist the Gaon Rabbi Eliezer Tzvi Brand, one of the illustrious Roshei Mesivta in Yerushalayim. It is interesting to note that Maran the “Shevet Halevi” is asking the mayor of Bnei Berak to assist a scholar from Jerusalem, as he notes that it is a worthy thing for the city to support such a dear Talmid Chacham out of its treasury. There is place for a Halachic debate on this letter: Did Maran the “Shevet Halevi” mean that the city should provide ongoing support also for Talmidei Chachomim who were non-residents, or was he referring to a one-time support as a gift.
