Letter by Rabbi Shemaya Halevi Steinberg to Rabbi Eliahu David Rabinowitz-Teomim (the Aderet), Av Beit Din of Jerusalem. Przemyśl, 1903. ”And my strong hope is that His Eminence will surely do all that is possible, and will ensure that whoever presently resides in the courtyard will leave it, and another person will live there for three years according to the lottery” – A request from Rabbi Shemaya Halevi Steinberg, Av Beit Din of Przemyśl, to the Aderet, asking him to fulfill the will of a woman who had donated an apartment in Jerusalem for the poor, and to remove a tenant who had already lived there for three years. Rabbi Shemaya Halevi Steinberg (1865–1941) – son and disciple of Rabbi Avraham Menachem Mendel Halevi Steinberg, Av Beit Din of Brody. From his youth, he studied Torah with extraordinary diligence and became proficient in all areas of Torah knowledge. Even before his bar mitzvah, he exchanged Torah letters with the leading sages of his generation. Served as Av Beit Din of Żabie from 1887, and from 1890 as Av Beit Din of Przemyśl, a position he held for fifty years. He remained with his community during World War II, enduring Soviet oppression despite opportunities to flee. After the Nazi occupation, he was warned to escape, but was injured in a wagon accident while fleeing. He was brought to a nearby village and passed away there. His many manuscripts were lost in the Holocaust. Rabbi Eliahu David Rabinowitz – the Aderet (1843–1905) – one of the great Torah luminaries of his generation. Served as rabbi of the communities of Ponevezh and Mir in Lithuania, and in his final years as rabbi of Jerusalem. Author of many pioneering and unique Torah works. His famous son-in-law was Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook. Folds, corner creases. Good condition.
