A Warm Hishtadlus Letter from the Kovner Rav A beautiful letter of hishtadlus dated 12 Tishrei 1918, from the gaon Rabbi Avraham Dovber Kahana Shapira, Rav of Kovno, to R' Alexander Carlebach, son of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach of Lubeck. Rav Shapira writes with warmth and derech eretz, speaking on behalf of the tzedakah needs of his city. He mentions that his brother, R’ Yosef, is currently there and had suggested that one could turn to him regarding tzedakah matters. He asks after the father’s shalom and even recalls earlier meetings they once shared. A refined, personable letter from a true gadol who knew how to speak to people with heart! Rabbi Avraham Dovber Kahana Shapira (1871–1943), son-in-law of the famed Gadol of Minsk, later became the beloved Rav of Kovno. His classic sefer Dvar Avraham is a יסוד in the world of lomdus and remains a staple on yeshiva shtenders until today.
