“Saving the Ponevezh Yeshivah” — A Letter from the Ponevezher Rav, Berlin 1930 A heartfelt hishtadlus letter from Harav Yosef Shlomo Kahaneman, written in Berlin in 1930, to R' Yosef Carlebach, Rav of Altona. Rav Kahaneman opens with sincere thanks for helping secure one hundred dollars for the yeshivah, and then gently asks that the Rav continue to stand at the side of the yeshivah’s shaliach. His words carry the tone of a man whose whole heart is tied up with the matzav of his yeshivah — “...and to the mercy of Heaven our eyes are lifted…” A long, flowing letter, rich with feeling, where you can sense how the Ponevezher Rav lived every moment with the yeshivah on his mind. A rare and historic glimpse into the early struggles to keep the Ponevezh Yeshivah alive.
