Shu”t Geonei Basrai — Turka, 1764, First Edition With the signature of the Beis Meir Shu”t Geonei Basrai, a collection of teshuvos from leading Acharonim — among them the Sma, the Bach, Tosafos Yom Tov, and others. Printed in Turka, 1764 — first edition. On the leaf before the title page appears the signature of the great gaon R’ Meir Posner, Baal Beis Meir: “ha’k Meir Posner, the k’k Mezritch.” In siman 6, R’ Meir added a handwritten hagahah in the margins. This very hagahah later appears at length in his sefer Beis Meir (Yoreh De’ah, kuntres on dinei kavua, daf 27b), clearly showing that he learned this sefer closely and incorporated his notes into his own work. R’ Meir Posner (1725–1807), Baal Beis Meir, was among the foremost poskim of Ashkenaz and one of the most important mefarshim on Shulchan Aruch. He served as Rav in Mezritch, Konigsberg, and Schotland. His sefer on Even HaEzer remains a foundational work for all who sit in din. The gaon of Lemberg, R’ Yosef Shaul Nathanson, Baal Shoel U’Meishiv, wrote of Beis Meir (edition of 1861): “It is a Beis Meir indeed — illuminating the eyes of all who enter the Beis Shmuel… I can almost say there is no equal among the mefarshim on Shulchan Aruch and the Acharonim, and one may rely upon his words in halachah as upon a firm support.”
