Orchos Chaim (Spinka) — The Foundational Sefer for Poskim of the Last Generation! Mahadura Basra in the Author’s Own handwriting! Orchos Chaim — likutim and dinim al seder Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim — from the gaon hatzaddik Rabbi Nachman Kahana ZT”L, Av Beis Din Spinka, son-in-law of the The ”Imrei Yosef” Rabbi Yosef Meir Weiss ZYA”A. Two parts. Sighet, 1898–1899 — first editions. What Makes This Copy Extraordinary In Part II, the author physically added extra paper to widen the margins beyond the original printed page — in order to create space to write. And he filled it. Long, continuous, densely written hagahos run across the margins from top to bottom — at times covering the entire added area — amounting to the scope of a sefer unto itself. This is not marginal notes. This is the mahadura basra of Orchos Chaim — in the author’s own handwriting. In 1962, when Orchos Chaim was reprinted in Yerushalayim, the new edition was based on these very hagahos. About the Author Rabbi Nachman Kahana (1861–1908) came from the illustrious Kahana family of gedolim. His father was the author of Divrei Geonim, and he was a descendant of the author of Kuntres HaSfeikos, brother of the Ketzos HaChoshen. He became the son-in-law of the Imrei Yosef of Spinka. His sefer Orchos Chaim was beloved by gedolei Yisrael and became a foundational work for many psakim among rabbanim and morei hora’ah in the last generation. Even before publication, it was adorned with notes from the Rabbi Shalom Mordechai Schwadron-(The Marsham Berzan)- and the Rabbi Eliyahu David Rabinowitz-Teomim Known as the ”Aderes”.
