Noda BiYehudah — First Edition (Tinyana) Inscribed by the Author’s Son R’ Shmuel Landau, with Extensive Hagahos of the Mechaber’s Talmid R’ Mordechai Ber of Yanikov Shu”t Noda BiYehudah, Tinyana, two parts — teshuvos of the gaon R’ Yechezkel Segal HaLevi Landau, Av Beis Din of Prague. Printed in Prague, 1811 — first edition. On the sha’ar appears a handwritten dedication from R’ Shmuel Landau, Av Beis Din of Prague, son of the mechaber and publisher of this edition (with his additions):  ” מתנה נתונה ליקר רוח איש תבונה, חכמתו בחוץ תרונה, להרב הגדול החריף ובקי מו”ה מרדכי בער יצ”ו, מאת מחו' הדבוק מאח, הק' שמואל סגל לנדא בן הגאון המחבר זצ”ל”. The recipient is his mechutan, the gaon R’ Mordechai Ber of Yanikov- a talmid muvhak and close talmid of the Noda BiYehudah. Throughout the sefer are numerous leaves filled with lengthy hagahos in his ksav yad on the contents of the sefer. It appears that some of his earlier notes (not before us) were sent to R’ Shmuel Landau, who at the end of the sefer (Noda BiYehudah Tinyana, Choshen Mishpat siman 62) added a long teshuvah responding to R’ Mordechai Ber’s critique: “Amar Shmuel — achar she’yatza mitachas machbes ha’dafus… higi’a l’yadi divrei mechutani… R’ Mordechai Ber mi’Yanik…” Before us are many additional hagahos of R’ Mordechai Ber which were apparently never sent to R’ Shmuel, and are revealed here for the first time! About 37 notes found across the sefer, for example, on: Orach Chaim simanim 136, 53, 56, 57, 46; Even HaEzer siman 112; Yoreh Deah simanim 201, 121, 62; and Choshen Mishpat siman 20. All are lengthy and respectful, written with great deference and requests for mechilah while engaging his Rebbe’s words. What lies before us is virtually a standalone chibur of hasagos on the Noda BiYehudah, worthy of publication! R’ Mordechai Ber of Yanikov R’ Mordechai Ber of Yanikov was a beloved talmid of the Noda BiYehudah, who mentions him with great affection: “…Ahuvi talmidi, yedidi v’chavivi, ha’rav ha’mufla yinuk v’chachim tova, Moreinu HaRav Mordechai Ber Yanik n”y… shamati hatzlachascha b’limudecha, samachti me’od b’rosi ki talmidai gadlu v’hitzlichu…” (Noda BiYehudah, Tinyana YD siman 13) He is also described in later sources as: “…ha’gaon ha’gadol ha’mefursam b’doro b’Toraso u’b’tzidkuso… talmid ha’gaon Baal Noda BiYehudah…” (Shem HaGedolim HaChadash)
