The Personal Chumash of the Tzaddik HaNagid R’ Moshe Aryeh Freund ZT”L, Rosh HaKahal u’Parnas of Sighet! Chumash Bamidbar with the Targumim and peirush Rashi, together with the peirush of the Alshich. Printed in Lemberg, 1863, at the fine press of the gevirim R’ Avraham Yitzchak Menkish and R’ Shlomo Sprecher. On the sha’ar, an inscription was recorded by the he”ch R’ Shalom, son of R’ Moshe Aryeh Freund ZT”L: “This Chumash belongs to my father, adoni avi mori, the Rav hamuflag b’Toirah u’Yirah, muflag b’Chassidus, the nagid hakatzin etc., k’shem tov morenu haRav R’ Moshe Aryeh Freund of Sighet. Written Parshas Naso, 1881. This was written by Shalom Freund.” On the forzatz leaf is recorded (apparently in the ksav yad of R’ Moshe Aryeh): “Parshas Tzitzis, Shelach 15, posuk … daf 82,” and there are several hagahos inside the sefer. Also found on the sha’ar are the signatures of his son, the chassid R’ Yitzchak Freund, and the signature of his grandson R’ Zalman Leib Freund, son of the above R’ Yitzchak and son-in-law of the he”ch R’ Yehoshua Fleishman Z”L of Satmar. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • The tzaddik hakatzin R’ Moshe Aryeh Freund ZT”L , son of the heilige R’ Yehoshua of Kraly ZY”A, established his residence in Sighet, and upon the advice of the Sar Shalom of Belz was appointed Rosh HaKahal and Parnas Ha’ir. He was a trusted ish emunim of Raboseinu HaKedoshim, Maran the Yetev Lev and his son the Kedushas Yom Tov ZY”A, and stood at their side with strength and determination to bring the kehillah under the Orthodox kancellarie. His oldest son was Maran the gaon hakadosh R’ Avraham Yehoshua Freund of Nasod ZY”A, from whom emerged a great shalsheles of Rabbonim and gedolei Torah. His other sons were chassidim and anshei maaseh, mighty gevirim baalei tzedakah va’chesed, from whom branched out important families in Klal Yisroel — the Freund family, the Glick family, and others. He was zocheh to see the Yetev Lev while awake. His makom menuchah is by the window near the ohel hakadosh of the Yetev Lev. A known עובדה is connected to this: shortly before his petirah, on Simchas Torah during the hakafos, he fell into weakness, and later said that he saw clearly his Rebbe, the Yetev Lev ZY”A. The Kedushas Yom Tov then said that since he was zocheh to see his Rebbe while awake, he should be buried near him. A Segulah to Go from Afelah to Orah, and for Hashpa’os of Chesed v’Rachamim R’ Moshe Aryeh ZT”L was greatly involved in the mitzvah of pidyon shevuyim. Maran the Kedushas Yom Tov ZY”A said at his bedside that even after his petirah he retains koach in Shamayim to be mashpia chesed v’rachamim. As brought by Maran Rabbeinu HaKadosh of Satmar (Eikev 1961; Savo 1965) from what he remembered from the hesped: “I once heard from my father z”l, he was maspid a Yid who was always osek in the mitzvah of pidyon shevuyim… he said, it is brought that tzaddikim — in what they were osek in this world, that very same avodah is given to them in the next world as well. What they did for Yidden, gemilus chasadim, they continue to ‘work’ above as well on behalf of Yidden, to be mashpia chesed v’rachamim. This is their avodah, what they did in this world…” The Neshamah of R’ Pinchas ben Yair Accompanied Him Rabbeinu added on his father’s words: “The Midrash Shmuel once entered to the Ari HaKadosh, and the Ari stood up to his full height before him… because he had just come from pidyon shevuyim. R’ Pinchas ben Yair was osek all his life in this mitzvah, and therefore one who is osek in pidyon shevuyim — R’ Pinchas ben Yair descends and accompanies him. The Ari saw that R’ Pinchas ben Yair was walking together with him… so he stood up for R’ Pinchas ben Yair. So they bring from the Ari HaKadosh.”
