List of the Supported — Kollel “Ahavas Tzion Zibenbergen” In the ksav yad and signature of the Ma’aglei Tzedek of Desh — 1878 A handwritten list of the בני עיר הקודש Tzfas who were receiving support, apparently through the kollel Ahavas Tzion – Zibenbergen. The entire document is in the ksav yad kodsho, with signature, of R’ Menachem Mendel Panet, Baal Ma’aglei Tzedek of Desh, founder of this kollel. Dated Thursday, Parshas Beha’aloscha, 1878. This is not merely a list of names. It is a living document of the historic bond between Hungarian kehillos and the yishuv in Tzfas — written by the very hand of the tzaddik who stood at the center of that effort. R’ Menachem Mendel Panet (1818–1885), son of the Baal Mar’eh Yechezkel, learned in his youth by the Chasam Sofer in Pressburg, who held him in special affection. In 1838 he left Pressburg to draw from Toras HaChassidus by the Yismach Moshe in Ohel. As a young man he merited a giluy Eliyahu in the manner of “Tishbi yetaretz kushyos, ” to resolve a difficult halachic matter that troubled him (היכל הבעש''ט, ח''ז עמ' קכ''ה). After his marriage he learned in chavrusa with the Baal Kol Aryeh. In 1860 he was appointed Av Beis Din of Orșova, where he established a large yeshivah of some two hundred bochurim. In 1862 he became Av Beis Din of Desh, where he spread Torah until his petirah. At the instruction of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz he also accepted the mantle of Rebbe, and many sought his eitzah and brachah. He authored numerous seforim in halachah — Ma’aglei Tzedek, Shaarei Tzedek, Mishpat Tzedek, Avnei Tzedek — and chiddushim on Shas titled Mivchar Tzedek.
