Gaonus in Tzedakah v’Chesed for the Aniyei Eretz HaKodesh With a Berachah of Simchas Purim and Chayei Nachas — Autograph Letter of the Rebbe of Kalushitz ZTzok”l An autograph letter, entirely in the ksav yad of the Rebbe of Kalushitz ZY”A, bearing his signature. Written on the night of Ta’anis Esther 1938, to the hanagid he’chassid R’ Menachem Mendel Frenkel a”h. In the letter, the Rebbe describes his own pressing need for funds. Yet instead of asking that the money be sent to him, he requests that it be sent to the chassid R’ Yaakov Yisroel Shmerler in Eretz HaKodesh:  ” שזה כביר שמנהגי לשלוח לו משלוח מנות איזה דאלער, ועתה אי אפשר מכאן לשלוח בשום אופן, ומאוד יהיה לי שמחה שלא אשנה הרגילות, ע”כ זה יהיה לי חשוב כפלים מאילו הגיע לידי לכאן ... שמחת פורים וחיי נחת..” It was more important to him not to break his yearly custom of sending support to a Yid in Eretz HaKodesh than to relieve his own difficulty. The Rebbe of Kalushitz R’ Chaneh Halberstam of Kalushitz ZTzok”l was known throughout the land for his kedushah. He stood with mesirus nefesh against every breach in the walls of Yiddishkeit. The Rebbes R’ Itzikel and R’ Yankele of Peshvorsk were among his talmidim and chassidim muvhakim, and spoke of him with awe throughout their lives. R’ Yankele once remarked that he merited to survive the war in order to tell the world that there had been a Kalushitzer Rav. In Divrei Chaneh it is recorded that the Rebbe of Satmar once expressed pain that in our generation there are no longer tzaddikim like the Rav of Kalushitz.
