Letter of Warning and Rescue! From Maran HaGaon Rabbi Meir Shapiro, Rosh Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin – Lublin 1934 Letter from Maran HaGaon Rabbi Meir Shapiro zt”l, Rosh Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin, to his relative Rabbi Yosef [Aharon Schor], Av Beis Din of Hrubeshov. In the letter, the Gaon informs him that he has been appointed as an official “expert” by the authorities in a certain legal matter in the city of Zamosh, concerning an issue directly affecting him, and warns him in strong terms: “…I earnestly request from his esteemed kovod haTorah that the inyanim there in his city be handled with the utmost seichel and care, so that there should be no zilusa through criminal proceedings…” Lublin, 1934. It is self-evident that sending a letter such as this—revealing to a close relative the intentions and maneuvers of the authorities—was an act fraught with real danger. Nevertheless, the Gaon placed himself at risk for the sake of saving a fellow Jew from harm—truly extraordinary. Condition: Good. Minor tears. Entirely in the Gaon's holy handwriting.
