Beis Yosef — Choshen Mishpat, Sabbioneta 1559 First Edition — With Early Italian Hagahos and Censor Restorations Beis Yosef on Tur Choshen Mishpat, by Rabbeinu Yosef Karo ZY”A. Printed in Sabbioneta, 1559 — first edition. On the title page appears an early Italian ksav yad inscription: “Yashpia ha’berachah mi’meromim…” Throughout the sefer are fine Italian hagahos, apparently from the same hand. In addition, one finds clear marks of censor deletions, later carefully restored in ksav yad. “Your Sefer Will Illuminate the Eyes of All Yisroel” The Malach HaMaggid, who learned be’kvius with Rabbeinu, assured him m’pi Shamayim that his sefer Beis Yosef would be accepted throughout Klal Yisroel and rise as a rei’ach nichoach before Hashem. As recorded in Maggid Meisharim (Parshas HaBerachah): ”.. ואפרך יהא צבור ומונח על רצון מזבחי, ואזכך למגמר חיבורא דילך לאנהרא ביה עיני כל ישראל, דהא כל עמין חכמים ונבונים ומשכילים ישאבון מחבורא דילך, דאקריא בית יוסף , ורויון מדשן ביתך, יפוצו מעינותיך חוצה חכמות בחוץ תרונה, ושמך יזכר בבתי כנסיות ובתי מדרשות, וכל עת שיזכירוך בבית המדרש יעלה ריח אפרך כקטורת בוסמין, ופוק חזי מאי אדביקת, ולמאי תזכה לקדשא שמי ברבים ..”(מגיד מישרים, פ' ברכה). A powerful expression of the heavenly promise that this sefer would become a cornerstone in the batei medrash of Klal Yisroel.
