A Foundational Chassidic Manuscript — Autograph Torah of the “Be’er Mayim Chaim” An exceptionally significant manuscript leaf in the holy handwriting of Rabbi Chaim of Czernowitz (1760–1817), ZT”L — mechaber of the foundational Chassidic classic Be’er Mayim Chaim, among the most beloved and yesod’dige seforim of early Chassidus. Presented here is a full, large folio leaf containing original Torah from the author himself on the parshiyos of Bo, Beshalach, and Yisro, with profound inyanim relating to Pesach and Shavuos, including: The chiyuv of zechiras Yetzias Mitzrayim The Seder night and the Arba’ah Bonim “Mah Nishtanah” and the Chacham’s question Makkas Bechoros and kedushas bechor Krias Yam Suf and the Shirah Kabbalas HaTorah and Matan Torah The ksav reflects the author’s own loshon and derech, preserving the living voice of one of the earliest masters of Chassidus. Manuscript Content The leaf opens with a דרוש in Parshas Bo, in the פרשה of קדש לי כל בכור , and continues through that סוגיא. It proceeds with original תורה on Parshas Beshalach, explaining אז ישיר . Notably, this reflects a different מהלך than what appears in the printed ספר. The final section turns to Parshas Yisro, clarifying the סדר הפסוקים of ויסעו מרפידים in the context of מתן תורה . The Esteem of Be’er Mayim Chaim in the Chassidic World Few seforim in early Chassidus attained the standing of Be’er Mayim Chaim, praised by tzaddikim across the doros. Among the well-known testimonies: The heilige Ruzhiner Rebbe ZYA”A would often say that when one learns from the sefer Be’er Mayim Chaim, it is as though one is hearing the words directly from the author’s holy mouth. His manner of writing was utterly unique — like a living conversation, ke’daber ish el rei’eihu. It was the minhag of the Rebbe that every Thursday night he would open the Aron Kodesh in his beis midrash and deliver heartfelt words of hisorerus and mussar. Only afterward would he commit those words to writing — and in this way the sefer itself was formed in a state of elevated kedushah (as recorded in Kisvei Chassidim). The Sar Shalom of Belz said this was the first mussar sefer he learned from. The Divrei Chaim of Sanz spoke of its koach to awaken the heart to the Ribbono Shel Olam. Reb  Yechezkel Halberstam of Shinova ZY”A said that the sefer Be’er Mayim Chaim “did him a great toivah in his nefesh.” If the printed sefer is mesugal to elevate, the author’s own handwritten Torah carries a unique, multiplied kedushah.
