Kuntres “Ateres Chachamim” — in the Ksav Yad Kodesh of the Baruch Taam ZYA”A — Pilpula Charifta A kuntres of chiddushim in the ksav yad of Rabbi Baruch Frankel-Teomim ZYA”A — on the sugya in Rosh Hashanah 29b regarding melachah she’einah tzerichah and its far-reaching ramifications. These are the very chiddushim later printed in his sefer Ateres Chachamim (al haShas, Yuzefov 1866). This kuntres emerged from the otzar of the gaon hatzaddik R’ Pinchas Frankel-Teomim, a distinguished descendant and son-in-law of the heilige Rabbi Yechezkel Halberstam of Shinive ZYA”A. An exceptionally rare and precious item— a complete kuntres in the ksav yad kodesh of this gaon kadosh, filled throughout with true pilpula charifta into which he toiled with taharah. About the Baruch Taam Rabbeinu, the gaon hakadosh Rabbi Baruch Frankel-Teomim, Av Beis Din Leipnik (1760–1828), was among the most renowned gedolim of his generation — famed for his geonus and חריפות, and for the hagahos he penned in the margins of his seforim. He learned under his father, the gaon hakadosh R’ Yehoshua Yechezkel Feivel Teomim, Av Beis Din Ostrowce; under the gaon R’ Liber Charif, Raavad of Krakow; and under the gaon R’ Dovid Tevel of Lisa. At the age of nineteen he was appointed Av Beis Din of Vishnitz. After the petirah of the gaon R’ Binyomin Wolf Eiger, he was called to fill his place as Av Beis Din of Leipnik, where he served for nearly thirty years. What the Gedolim Said About Him The Chasam Sofer ZYA”A testified that if Torah were to be forgotten from Yisroel, the Baruch Taam could restore it through his pilpul. In his hesped he said: “Gaon Yisroel, Baruch Taamo u’Mishnaso, mofes hador… who spread Torah in Yisroel with חריפות and בקיאות, and whose students could hardly plumb the depth of his mind due to the profundity of his sharpness…” His Famed Son-in-Law His illustrious son-in-law was the heilige Divrei Chaim of Sanz ZYA”A, his outstanding talmid, who edited the sefer Baruch Taam. He writes in the hakdamah: “…For about a year that I was with him, he taught me almost the entire Shas with the Rishonim. Every hour he revealed to me wonders in his pilpul. He transmitted to me many of his pilpulim and his derech halimud — he would read from his ksav and I would write into the sefer…”
