The gaon hakadosh Rabbi Eliezer Halevi Horowitz, Rav of Tarnigrad and Baal Noam Megadim (niftar 1806), was among the foremost leaders of early Chassidus and was equally renowned for his exceptional gaonus and lomdus. He was a talmid of two of the foremost talmidim of the Baal Shem Tov, the heilige Maggid of Zlotchov, and the R' Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk ZYA”A. He later served as Rav of Tarnigrad and authored the celebrated Noam Megadim al haTorah, one of the foundational seforim of Chassidus. The Chozeh of Lublin extolled the holy mechaber in extraordinary terms, testifying that all his ways were l'Shem Shomayim, and describing him as an outstanding giant whose equal was not to be found, equally distinguished in halachah and aggadah.
